The bridge story
We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Is what the Amsterdam people thought, as the New Amstel Bridge replaced the ferry between De Pijp and Oost. The double bascule bridge was the newest bridge over the Amstel, hence the name.
The bridge replaced The Amstelveer, a ferry between Korte Ouderkerkerdijk and Amsteldijk. Now an important connection between City Center and East side. Now also for tram line 3, that could not have taken the ferry!
