The place to show your wild side: the Hippopotamus Bridge. It has been a drawbridge for bicycle and foot traffic since 1987 and is around the corner from Artis, The Amsterdam Zoo. That would explain the name, but nothing could be further from the truth. Thousands of years ago, hippos seem to have been walking around here!
The idea for this bridge name comes from Alexander van den Boogert, who had read that there were hippos around Artis thousands of years ago. He wanted to bring the hippos back to Artis by having a sculpture group of a number of hippos placed half in and half out of the water at the foot of the new bridge to be built.
