The bridge story
A Dutch saying for dancing is “Feet off the floor!”. The Ir. B. Bijvoetbrug is only for pedestrians and cyclists. Freely translated as “The Foot Bridge” is the connection between the Staalstraat and the former island Vlooienburg. The Stopera, The Amsterdam City Hall & Opera, was built here in 1980.
In 1879 the bridge collapsed. The bridge keeper tried to force the bridge to close by walking on the bridge deck. This caused the bridge deck to hit the abutment so hard that it broke. The bridge was completely removed during the construction of the Stopera and was restored in 1985. The bridge is named after the architect Bernard Bijvoet, who came up with a plan for opera in Amsterdam.
