The bridge story
The Magere Brug (bridge no. 242) is a double drawbridge in the center of Amsterdam over the river Amstel. The bridge connects the quays of the Amstel at the Kerkstraat & Nieuwe Kerkstraat, between the Keizersgracht & Nieuwe Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht & Nieuwe Prinsengracht. The first bridge on this site was built in or just after 1691 and was called Kerkstraat Bridge. The bridge was removed and rebuilt twice after that. The last time at the end of the 17th century because there was still development on the Nieuwe Kerkstraat, however there was not much money so a wooden bridge was chosen and narrower (skinnier) hence its name Skinny Bridge. At night the 1200 lamps are shining bright like a diamond.
